OBITUARY
Father Brungs was born on July 7, 1931, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Following his graduation from Gonzaga High School, Washington, D.C., he entered the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues, Wernersville, Pa., on September 7, 1949. After taking his first vows on September 8, 1951, he pursued juniorate (college) studies at Wernersville from 1951 to 1953 and was then sent to study philosophy at Bellarmine College, Plattsburg, N.Y. (1953-1955) and Loyola Seminary, Shrub Oak, N.Y. (1955-1956). As a Jesuit scholastic, Father Brungs pursued graduate studies at St. Louis University from 1956 to 1961 and received a doctorate in physics. From 1961 to 1965, Father Brungs studied theology at Woodstock College, Md., where he was ordained to the priesthood in Woodstock College Chapel by Most Rev. Lawrence J. Shehan, archbishop of Baltimore, on June 14, 1964. After completing his theological studies, Father Brungs made his tertianship at the Jesuit Martyrs Shrine, Auriesville, N.Y., from 1965 to 1966 and his final profession in the Society of Jesus in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Savannah, Ga., on August 15, 1967. In 1966, Father Brungs returned to St. Louis University for post-doctoral research in solid state physics until 1970. He then taught physics at the university from 1970 to 1982 and theology from 1973 to 1984. During his years in St. Louis, he published several articles in scientific publications and was the author of several religious works. Interested in the relationship between faith and science, Father Brungs became director of ITEST (Institute for Theological Encounter with Science and Technology) in 1968, a position he held until his death on May 8, 2006 in St. Louis, Mo. |
