OBITUARY
Father Dooley was born in Rochester, N.Y., on July 28, 1924. Following his graduation from Aquinas Institute in Rochester, Father Dooley entered the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues, Wernersville, Pa., on February 1, 1943. He took his First Vows on February 2, 1945, and pursued Juniorate studies at Wernersville from 1944 to 1946. He was then sent to study philosophy at West Baden College in Indiana from 1946 to 1949. From 1949 to 1952, Father Dooley, as a Jesuit Scholastic, taught English and religion at Loyola High School in Towson, Md. Following regency, he studied theology at Woodstock College, Md., from 1952 to 1956, where he was ordained to the priesthood in the Woodstock College Chapel by the Most Rev. Francis P. Keough, Archbishop of Baltimore on June 19, 1955. Upon completing his theological studies, Father Dooley made his Tertianship at the Jesuit Martyrs Shrine, Auriesville, N.Y., from 1956 to 1957. From 1957 to 1961, Father Dooley served as assistant prefect of Studies at Georgetown Prep, North Bethesda, Md., where he also taught religion to seniors. He was then assigned as prefect of studies (1961-1970) for the high schools of the Maryland Province. During this time, he also served as the province archivist. From 1970 to 1974, Father Dooley pursued graduate studies at the University of Miami, where he earned a doctorate in education. Father Dooley then began a long and distinguished tenure (1974-1995) as president of Gonzaga College High School, Washington, D.C. Here, among his many accomplishments, he increased student enrollment, renovated aging buildings and built a new gymnasium. Father Dooley made his Final Profession in the Society of Jesus at Gonzaga on February 2, 1978. From 1995 until his death, Father Dooley served as a pastoral minister at St. Patrick’s Church, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. |
