Joseph Grega, SJ(Maryland) Brother Joseph Edward Grega, S.J., 91, died on Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Manresa Hall, Merion Station, Pa.  He was a Jesuit for 57 years.

Brother Joseph E. Grega was born in Freeland, Pa., on February 19, 1915.  Following graduation from Freeland High School, he worked for the railroad as a mail clerk and spent three years in the Army Air Force as a mechanic before entering the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues, Wernersville, Pa., on July 30, 1948.  After taking his First Vows on July 31, 1950, Brother Grega remained in the Jesuit Community at Wernersville, where he worked in the shoe repair shop (1950-1952), and had charge of the clothes room (1952-1957) and the dining room (1957-1958).

In 1958, Brother Grega was assigned to Woodstock College, Md., where he pronounced his Final Vows as a Jesuit brother in the Woodstock College Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on August 15, 1958.  Here, he served the Jesuit community as assistant custodian of buildings and managed Bellarmine Hall, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., until 1965.  He then became assistant librarian at the Woodstock College Library before he returned to Wernersville in 1970.

At Wernersville, where he was to remain for 34 years, Brother Grega again took charge and care of the dining room from 1970 to 1981, served as assistant librarian from 1981 to 2000, and continued to reside there in the Jesuit Community, praying for the Church and the Society until 2004.

Because of age and failing health, Brother Grega was transferred to Manresa Hall, Merion Station, Pa., on March 12, 2004 where he remained until his death.
