"Today our prime educational objective must be to form men-and-women-for-others; men and women who will live not for themselves but for God and his Christ... men and women completely convinced that love of God which does not issue in justice for others is a farce."  - Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J. (1973)

Province Days 2004: June 8-11, 2004 at Loyola College in MD
The Maryland Province Jesuits and their lay partners engaged in common mission will be gathering in communion, companionship and collaboration to discern how to minister more effectively as servant leaders in the Church. Peggy Steinfels, former editor of Commonweal magazine, and Chris Lowney, author of Heroic Leadership: Best Practices from a 450 Year-Old Company That Changed the World, will join us to explore the current situation in the Church and how our shared Ignatian vision informs our response.

Jesuit Family Retreats, July 2004
Lord, teach us to pray
, is the theme for this summer’s Jesuit Family Retreat program scheduled for July.  Since 1983, the Jesuits of the Maryland Province and their associates have hosted several five-day (Monday through Friday) retreats during July at their retreat center in Blue Ridge Summit, PA.

The retreats are designed for economically-challenged families who live in cities and who would not otherwise have the means or opportunity to get away as a family to reflect, relax, pray and play with each other.

Brad Hamrlik, SJ, director of this year’s Family Retreat, said families who attend “come away from the experience having grown closer to one another and to God.”

As a Jesuit retreat in the Catholic tradition, the program at Blue Ridge includes Catholic Mass, reconciliation, and other times devoted to various types of prayer.

The Retreat Center in Blue Ridge Summit is located on a mountaintop along the Appalachian Trail.  Families reside in two large houses with bedrooms that accommodate two or three people.  The center includes a chapel, swimming pool and basketball court, a new dining and meeting facility, and acres of grounds for sports and walks, naps and hikes.  All families are asked to pay a modest fee for food and supplies, based on total family income.

This summer, the program is offered the following four weeks: July 5-9, July 12-16, July 19-23, July 26-30.

If you know of a family who may want to fill out an application for the Jesuit Family Retreat, contact Denise Frederico at 610-543-3542.  If you would be interesting in serving as staff, contact Brad Hamrlik, SJ, at 773-508-8961.
