An Ignatian Moment: Lenten Jesuit Video Reflections

Lent is a time for Christians to prepare for the passion and resurrection of Christ our Lord. Through reflection and prayer, we are able to refocus ourselves to better serve as faithful men and women for others. Even Jesuits, who have spent years praying and growing closer to Christ, still look for new ways to pray during Lent.

This Lent, Jesuits of the Maryland and USA Northeast Provinces will be sharing video reflections about what they are doing during these 40 days in preparation for Easter Sunday. We hope that by hearing these personal stories from Jesuits in our provinces, you will be inspired in your own Lenten journey.

A new video will be released every week on our Facebook page.

Holy Week - Fr. Fred Betti, SJ

Fr. Fred Betti, SJ, is the associate pastor at St. Michael’s Church in Buffalo. For the past 15 years he has worked at the Response to Love Center, which serves those in need with a food pantry and social programs. Listen to Fr. Betti talk about how this Lent he is following Jesus’ call to action in John’s gospel, “As I have done for you, you must do for each other.”

Week 5 - Fr. Robert Hussey, SJ

Fr. Robert Hussey, SJ, provincial of the Maryland Province reflects on Lenten prayer and how it revolves around Jesus’ words that state, “This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the Gospel.”

Week 4 - Fr. John Cecero, SJ

Before his public ministry, Jesus fasted for forty days in the Judaean Desert and overcame temptations from Satan. This Lent, Fr. John Cecero, SJ, provincial of the USA Northeast Province, is reflecting on Jesus’ journey to help him overcome his demon of worrying and to better serve in his ministry.

Week 3 -  Fr. Dennis Baker, SJ

Fr. Dennis Baker, SJ, president of Xavier High School in Micronesia, recounts the story of a man who was able to navigate despite being blind. He could not use the sun or stars to tell where he was going but instead listened to the water around him to find his way. We too need to remember to listen to God this Lent so that we can find our way to Him.

Week 2 - Fr. A.J. Rizzo, SJ

Fr. A.J. Rizzo, SJ, was ordained last June and currently serves at St. Ignatius Church in Baltimore. Fr. Rizzo reminds us that Jesus chose to stay hungry and powerless in the desert during his 40 days, and thus He stands in solidarity with all those in our world who are hungry, fearful and powerless. We are invited to do the same.

Week 1 - Fr. Bob Pecoraro, SJ

Fr. Bob Pecoraro, SJ, is the president of Cheverus High School in Portland, Maine. Listen to him talk about the cost of discipleship and how that will be a focus of his prayer life during this Lent.
