Jesuits elect new leader
The Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus is happy to announce that today in Rome, the Rev. Adolfo Nicolas, SJ, formerly the President of the Jesuit Conference of East Asia and Oceana, was elected the 30th Superior General of the Society of Jesus by the delegates of the 35th General Congregation.
Father Nicolas succeeds Father Peter-Hans Kovenbach, SJ, who served as Superior General from 1983 until the present. The election of Father Nicolas was confirmed by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI earlier this morning.
Three members of the Maryland Province are among the 216 Jesuit electors from around the world participating in the Congregation. They are the Provincial Father Timothy B. Brown, SJ; Father Ronald J. Anton, SJ, formerly the dean of Loyola College’s Sellinger School of Business and now at the University of Beijing; and Father Thomas E. Roach, SJ, who is working at the Jesuit headquarters in Rome as the secretary for secondary education.
Some 350 Jesuits are part of the Maryland Province, with 75 living and working in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
Fraternally in the Lord,

William J. Watters, SJ Acting - Provincial
