Connecting with Chile and Bolivia

Maryland Provincial Timothy B. Brown, SJ, (left) signs the new twinning agreement along with Chile Provincial Guillermo Baranda, SJ.

Nearly 70 years have passed since the arrival of Gustave Weigel, SJ, to Chile. Several years after he arrived in 1937 as a member of the Maryland-New York Province of the Society of Jesus, Father Weigel became dean of the School of Theology of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. He soon proposed that the Chile Province send some scholastics to the United States to study theology.

Now, decades after those early years of working in Chile, the Maryland Province has renewed a formal twinning agreement with the Chilean Province. Connections between the two provinces have expanded significantly.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Andes, the Maryland Province has also established a formal twinning agreement with the Bolivia Province.
