In fall of 2003, Timothy B. Brown, S.J., provincial, established
a Province Office of Mission and Renewal. Its mandate is to provide
opportunities for Jesuits and Lay Partners to reflect together and
continually renew their Ignatian mission. The office consists of
James Connor, SJ, provincial assistant for mission and continuing
renewal and Kevin O'Brien, director of lgnatian partnerships.
The mission of the universal Society of Jesus is "the service of faith through the promotion of justice."
To fulfill this mission effectively requires, according to Father General Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, that we "reflect
as much on the world as on ourselves so as to know how we can change ourselves and up-date our knowledge, our
attitudes and our apostolic methods.., in order to rise up to our vocation." And he quotes Father Pedro Arrupe
in saying, "something much deeper and extensive [than theoretical or professional recycling] is needed,
since ongoing formation is rooted deep down in the spirit, which seeks to adapt itself in every possible way
to the environment and to foresee the future itself." (Continuing Formation as Creative Fidelity, Rome, 2003)
The Mission and Renewal team identifies or coordinates personal or apostolic renewal opportunities,
publicizes these opportunities as well as examples of successful achievement of mission renewal, throughout the
Province. Its areas of special concentration are the Spiritual Exercises, Ignatian leadership, Lay-Jesuit Partnership,
regional collaboration, and "mission and identity." Click here for more information.
