Saint Joseph’s University Names Mark C. Reed as First Lay President

April 24, 2015 — Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia has named Mark C. Reed, Ed.D., as its 28th president — the first lay president in the university’s 164-year history. Reed currently serves as senior vice president and chief of staff at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut. He will succeed current president Jesuit Father C. Kevin Gillespie on July 1.

“On behalf of the Maryland Province, I am pleased to endorse Dr. Mark C. Reed as the president-elect of Saint Joseph's University,” said Jesuit Father Robert M. Hussey, provincial of the Maryland Province Jesuits. “Given Dr. Reed's dedication to Jesuit education and Ignatian values, I have the utmost confidence in his ability to lead the mission of Saint Joseph's with great wisdom, strength and vision.”

“I am honored and humbled to be chosen as Saint Joseph’s University’s first lay president,” Reed said. “As a Philadelphia native, I have known and cared about Saint Joseph’s all of my life. I am deeply inspired by its Jesuit, Catholic heritage, its reputation for academic excellence, and its dedication to serving the surrounding community and the world beyond its borders. I look forward to working with the university’s outstanding faculty and staff to help fully realize its mission.”

A 1992 graduate of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia, Reed received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Fairfield University in 1996; a master’s degree in secondary educational administration from Boston College in 1999; an MBA from Fairfield in 2002; and a doctorate of education in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania in 2008.

During his 15-year career at Fairfield University, Reed has served as interim vice president for university advancement; vice president for administration and student affairs; vice president for student affairs; associate vice president and dean of students; and dean of students. He also teaches mathematics as an adjunct faculty member and recently received Fairfield’s Distinguished Faculty/Administrator Award.

In his current role at Fairfield, Reed serves as the principal advisor to Fairfield president Jesuit Father Jeffrey P. von Arx and is the senior officer of the university and its leadership team.

“Dr. Reed’s lifelong commitment to Jesuit values and mission, and his outstanding record as a leader in Catholic higher education, make him the perfect choice to lead Saint Joseph’s into the future,” said Edward W. Moneypenny ’64, chair of SJU’s Board of Trustees. [Source: Saint Joseph’s University]
