1,600+ Gather for Friends and Alumni Mass

Oct. 27, 2017 - The third annual Jesuit Friends and Alumni Sunday Masses took place on Oct. 21-22, gathering more than 1,600 alumni and their loved ones for liturgies and receptions held at 24 parishes and schools. The 60 graduates who attended St. Mary of Nazareth Church in Amman, Jordan, marked the first time that the program had expanded to an international location.

“This initiative began three years ago with the goal of bringing together alumni of Jesuit schools and friends of the Jesuits across the generations to rekindle their connection with us and each other,” said Fr. James Miracky, SJ, founder of the event and provincial assistant for higher education for the USA Northeast Province. “Those who attend also learn how they can keep the Jesuit spirit alive through opportunities to feed their spiritual lives and serve the local and global community.”

In all, more than 60 Jesuit institutions worldwide were represented at the masses, including a number of apostolates spanning the country well beyond the East Coast – from Jesuit High School in New Orleans and Brebeuf Jesuit Prep in Indianapolis, to Strake Jesuit in Houston and Seattle University.

At St. Mary of the Assumption-Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-St. Benedicta Parish in Staten Island, Fr. Marc Roselli, SJ, said that those who attended received a special glimpse of the parish’s religious education program. “The 10 a.m. mass was hosted by students in the program who are in the fifth and sixth grades, who did the readings, the Prayers of the Faithful and brought up the gifts. The fourth graders did a reenactment of the gospel.”

“Reports from a number of sites tell us that the masses were inspiring and the conversations were energetic. We hope to build on this momentum and strengthen this growing tradition in the years to come,” Fr. Miracky said.
