Cristo Rey Project
Province Moves Ahead with Project
On September 29th, 2005 the Baltimore Cristo Rey Study conducted
by the Maryland Province of Jesuits was unanimously approved and
provisionally accepted into the Cristo Rey Network of high schools.
There are currently eleven high schools that make up the network
of Catholic high schools and at least six new schools to be starting
over the course of 2006 and 2007.
Baltimore’s study showed strong need, desire and capacity
for this innovative work-study high school that would serve students
from families of modest means. In these schools 70% of the students’
tuition is raised through the work-study program.
The Cristo Rey Network is a national association of 11 high schools
that provide quality, Catholic, college preparatory education to
young people from low-income families who otherwise could not afford
such an opportunity. Member schools have their own identity but
are characterized by a curriculum that is tailored to the students’
needs and by the unique Corporate Internship Program developed in
1996 by Cristo Rey Jesuit High School of Chicago. Through these
corporate internships, each student finances the majority of the
cost of his or her education.

"We are energized at the prospect of
founding a Cristo Rey school here in Baltimore. As Jesuits,
we are committed to education. As residents of Baltimore city,
we are committed to ministering to those in need and improving
the community. This is an opportunity for all of us to roll
up our sleeves and reaffirm those commitments, to our community
and to the often forgotten citizens of Baltimore who deserve
our assistance and faith."
